Victim 25 – adult male
An adult, with a tall, thin person still vigorous on bony legs, his back not bent by the years but accustomed to the hard work of the fields and the farm, he was one of the last inhabitants of the Villa; he was found lying down on the layer of ashes deposited on the floor of a dark and low room (n. 35). The imprint that could be made by pouring liquid plaster across the hollow left by the shapes of the body in the layer of ash, among all the imprints preserved on the ground of Pompeii of the human tragedy of that cataclysm, is one of the most dramatically expressive (fìg. 2). After wandering, insane with terror, through the rooms of the house he had taken over as host, separated from his other companions or relatives who were dying elsewhere, he had taken refuge in his closed room to die on his own bed, sheltered from the roaring storm that raged outside; Desperately lonely, as the last scream of the young girl who had collapsed in the nearby vestibule reached him, he had stretched himself out on that poor bed, and had remained lying on his right side, his arms raised to rest his head on them as if to hide the terrible contraction of his mouth and jaws in the last breath of asphyxia. Under the skullcap, the strongly hooked nose, the line of the neck and the thinness of the cheeks show the Italic type of the worker from Campania; the imprint has preserved on the body the folds of the clothes he wore and the shape of the "calcei" he wore on his feet; in the little finger of his left hand was an iron ring with an engraved carnelian of a female figurine; five bronze coins and one whip, formed the property carried by this faithful servant who had wanted to die at his post.

dagli anni ma avvezza alle dure fatiche dei campi e della fattoria, era uno
degli ultimi abitanti della Villa; lo si rinvenne coricato bocconi sullo strato
di cenere depositato sul pavimento d'un buio e basso stanzino (n. 35).
L'impronta che poté farsene con la colata del gesso liquido a traverso il cavo
lasciato dalle forme del corpo nello strato di cenere, fra quante impronte ci
ha conservato il suolo di Pompei dell'umana tragedia di quel cataclisma, è una
delle più drammaticamente espressive (fìg. 2). Dopo
aver errato, folle di terrore, fra gli ambienti dell'abitazione che aveva, come
ostiario, in consegna, separato dagli altri compagni o congiunti che
agonizzavano altrove, si era rifugiato nel suo chiuso stanzino per morire sul
proprio giaciglio, al riparo della scrosciante tempesta che infuriava al di
fuori; si era disteso, disperatamente solo, mentre gli giungeva l'ultimo urlo
della giovanetta che stramazzava nel vicino vestibolo, su quel povero
giaciglio, e vi era rimasto coricato sul fianco destro, le braccia portate in
alto per appoggiarvi il capo quasi a nascondere la spaventosa contrazione della
bocca e delle mascelle nell'ultimo anelito dell'asfissia. Sotto la calotta
cranica, si delinea, nel naso fortemente adunco, nella linea del collo, nella
magrezza delle guance, il tipo italico del lavoratore campano; l'impronta ha
conservato sul corpo le pieghe degli indumenti che indossava e la forma dei
"calcei " che portava ai piedi; nel mignolo della mano sinistra era
un anello in ferro con una corniola incisa d'una figurina muliebre; cinque
monete in bronzo ed una del tutto frusta, formavano il peculio che portava con
sé questo servo fedele che aveva voluto morire al suo posto di custodia.

Victim 25 is a male aged over 20 years.
The body was found in room 35 of the Villa dei Misteri with its shoulders turned towards the door on the 24th of September 1929.
Based on the cast present, it seems he was wearing a tunic, a wool cloak, a belt and that he had on his feet calcei [calceus: a kind of low Roman boot or leather high-top shoe].

coricato bocconi sullo strato di cenere depositato sul pavimento d'un buio e
basso stanzino (n. 35). Sotto la calotta cranica, si delinea, nel naso
fortemente adunco, nella linea del collo, nella magrezza delle guance, il tipo
italico del lavoratore campano.

Victim 26 - Thought by Maiuri to be female but now thought probably to be a male
Female?
Victim 26 was found in the entrance vestibule of the Villa, and it was
possible to obtain the partial imprint of the lower limbs and the trunk,
because, lying upside down in the layer of ash at m. 0.60 from the floor, the
ruin of the materials fallen from the upper floors, had upset the
stratification of the ground. It was recognized as the body of an adolescent
with slender legs, one stretched out, the other gripped in the spasm of
suffocation, her chest stretched out and lifted by the last gasp of breathing.
Detaching herself from the group of other fugitives, when the terrible hail of
lapilli and pumice was still breaking, the young girl had ventured alone
towards the front door to try an extreme escape through the fields; but either
the first dense fall of the ashes, or the fumes that polluted the air, stopped
her breathless at the edge of the house; she fell backwards on the already high
ash, while the ruin of the attics and roofs fell on her young body.
Vittima 26 si
rinvenne nel vestibolo d'ingresso della Villa, e se ne poté ricavare l'impronta
parziale degli arti inferiori e del tronco, perché, giacendo rovescia nello
strato di cenere a m. 0,60 dal pavimento, la rovina dei materiali precipitati
dai piani superiori, aveva sconvolto la stratificazione del terreno. Vi si riconobbe
il corpo di un'adolescente dalle gambe esili, snelle, distesa l'una, rattratta
l'altra nello spasimo della soffocazione, il torace proteso e sollevato
dall'ultimo ansito della respirazione. Staccatasi dal gruppo degli altri
fuggiaschi, quando ancora irrompeva la terribile gragnuola dei lapilli e delle
pomici, si era avventurata, da sola, la giovanetta verso la porta d'ingresso
per tentare un'estrema via di scampo a traverso i campi; ma o la prima densa
caduta delle ceneri, o le esalazioni che ammorbavano l'aria, l'arrestarono
ansimante sul limitare della casa; cadde rovescia sulla cenere già alta, mentre
sul giovane corpo si abbatteva la rovina dei solai e dei tetti.

Male?
According to Osanna, Capurso, e Masseroli, the victim is probably male.
There are two hypotheses as to when and where the body was found:
Room 18 of the Villa dei Misteri on the 17th of August 1929.
Vestibule 66 of the Villa dei Misteri 1929-1930.

Detaching themself from the group of other fugitives, the young person had

It is now thought possibly to be a male over 20 years of age.

Three young female victims
The terror and the flight of the family had brought three women together alone, far from everyone, and only desperately united by the bonds of affection that should have bound them to each other, in the rooms on the upper floor of the vestibule; cut off from all possibility of escape by the ruin of the stairs and galleries, here together they died. When, under the weight of the avalanche of lapilli, the roofs and floors collapsed, the poor bodies were thrown together into the room below (n. 55), and there they were found in a confused and disordered heap that hardly allowed the number of victims to be identified. But their identity was revealed by the female ornaments that still adorned their person: two gold bracelets, of the usual type that these Pompeian gold jewels have, with a cylindrical bent rod, with a smooth elliptical bezel, one hollow, the other with a massive rod with a ring of suspension for a pendant on which was engraved a stylized branch of a palm, were found tucked into the radius of two skeletons; Two other bracelets, one hollow and the other solid, and the latter with an engraving of a palm branch on the bezel, were found near other bones, which had been broken. Also belonging to the clothing of this group of women were a necklace composed of 16 grains of gold and 18 of glass paste and three gold rings, two of which were engraved with an eagle and a crouching Venus; and finally, broken into three pieces, a rectangular bronze mirror with a silver patina. And somewhat richer than that of the host servant, was the property of these women, because, mixed with the bones of the skeletons, ten silver coins of the imperial and republican age and one bronze coin were collected. The coins and gold jewellery were still adhered to by a layer of dark substance, a remnant of the fabrics the women wore or of the leather or cloth bag in which the coins were contained.
All the more worthy of pity is the fate of these women left to themselves in those tragic hours, if one bears in mind that the smallness of one of the rings and the necklace reveals that there was a little girl among them and that her other companions in misfortune must have been very young, if one bears in mind the form of the other rings and necklaces. In those last moments, the derelicts were bound to the anxious weeping of the youngest of them, who was too young to trust in a common salvation. And so, from the ruins of the sumptuous villa, it seems that among the confused mass of these poor bones and golden jewels, we can still hear the cries of these young women who wanted and knew how to die next to a trembling little girl.

la fuga dei familiari avevano fatto raccogliere sole, lontane da tutti, e solo
disperatamente unite dai vincoli di affetto che dovevano legarle l'una
all'altra, tre donne nelle stanze del piano superiore del vestibolo; tagliate
fuori da ogni possibilità di scampo per la rovina delle scale e dei ballatoi,
qui insieme morirono. Quando avvenne, sotto il peso della valanga dei lapilli,
il crollo dei tetti e dei pavimenti, assieme precipitarono i poveri corpi nel
sottoposto ambiente (n. 55), e là si rinvennero in un confuso e disordinato
ammasso che non lasciava quasi ormai più identificare il numero delle vittime.
Ma l'esser loro venne rivelato dagli ornamenti femminili che adornavano ancora
la loro persona: due braccialetti d'oro, del consueto tipo che hanno questi
monili aurei pompeiani, a verga cilindrica ripiegata, con castone liscio
ellittico, l'uno cavo, l'altro a verga massiccia con anellino di sospensione
per un pendaglietto su cui era inciso un ramo stilizzato di palma, si
rinvennero infilati nel radio di due scheletri; altri due braccialetti,
egualmente l'uno cavo e l'altro massiccio, e questo ultimo con uguale incisione
d'un ramo di palma sul castone, si raccolsero vicino ad altre ossa, sconvolte.
Appartenevano anche all'abbigliamento di questo gruppo muliebre, una collanina
composta di 16 grani di oro e 18 di pasta vitrea e tre anelli aurei di cui due
con decorazione incisa di un'aquila e di una Venere accosciata;
ed infine, fratturato in tre pezzi, uno specchio rettangolare di bronzo patinato
d'argento. Ed alquanto più ricco di quello del servo ostiario, era il peculio
di queste donne, perché, frammiste alle ossa degli scheletri, si raccolsero
dieci monete d'argento di età imperiale e repubblicana e una di bronzo. Alle
monete ed ai monili aurei aderiva ancora uno strato di sostanza scura, residuo
delle stoffe che le donne indossavano o della borsa di cuoio o di panno in cui
le monete erano contenute.
Tanto più
degna di pietà appare la sorte di queste donne abbandonate a se
stesse in quelle tragiche ore, se si pon mente che la
piccolezza di uno degli anelli e della collanina, rivela che fra esse vi era
una fanciulletta e che assai giovani di anni dovevano essere le altre sue
compagne di sventura, se si tien presente il modulo
degli altri anelli e monili. Restarono le derelitte legate in quegli estremi
momenti al trepido pianto della minore di esse, troppo tenera di anni per far
confidare in una comune salvezza. E così, dalla rovina della Villa sontuosa
sembra di cogliere ancora, fra l'ammasso confuso di queste povere ossa e di
questi aurei monili, il pianto di queste giovani donne che vollero e seppero
morire accanto ad una fanciulletta tremante.

Other victims
Other inhabitants of the Villa tried to find a way out, and at the first eruption of the eruptive cycle, they took refuge, terrified, in what must have seemed the safest place, in the basement of the cryptoporticus: there they took refuge and waited in vain for the cloud to pass. Excavators found four human skeletons, lying in various positions next to each other in the soil that the waters had poured down, and the position of their limbs showed how agonising their agony must have been. They had gathered together, all four of them, near a breach in one of the small arches in the outer wall of their dungeon and had waited for the infernal fury to pass and for them to be allowed to escape through that opening into the garden and from the garden across the fields to the sea. A vain wait! The whirlwind of lapilli and pumice, which descended like a torrent down the only staircase leading to the cryptoporticus, after raising the level of the garden, had blocked the only way out, closed off the glimpses of light and made the air deadly; they were extinguished side by side, just as 18 people, including women, young people and adults, belonging to that wealthy residence were extinguished in the cryptoporticus of the nearby "Villa di Diomede". No ornaments or jewellery were found next to the four victims, but only a few rustic dishes for wine or water, the last viaticum of the dead, were placed next to the wall.
Nine victims found in different places do not represent all the inhabitants of the Villa. A large part of the numerous "Familia" and the owner himself had sought refuge with the other fleeing hordes towards the sea and certainly in vain, as death surprised them in their desperate flight.
Una via di
scampo tentarono altri abitanti della Villa che, al primo erompere
dell'eruzione, si rifugiarono atterriti in quello che dové sembrare il luogo
più sicuro, nel sotterraneo del criptoportico: vi si rifugiarono ed attesero
invano che il nembo passasse. Si rinvennero infatti a fiore del terriccio che
le acque avevano fatto colare all'interno, distesi l'uno presso l'altro in
varie positure, quattro scheletri umani che dalla posizione degli arti
lasciavano scorgere quale potesse essere stata la loro angosciosa agonia. Si
erano raccolti tutti e quattro presso una breccia aperta in una delle arcatelle
del muro esterno di quel sotterraneo, ed avevano atteso che la furia infernale
passasse e fosse lor dato di uscire da quel pertugio nel giardino e dal giardino,
a traverso i campi, al mare. Vana attesa! Il turbine dei lapilli e delle pomici
disceso come un torrente per l'unica scala di accesso al criptoportico, dopo
aver rialzato il livello del giardino, aveva bloccato la sola via di uscita,
chiuso gli spiragli di luce e resa mortifera l'aria; si spensero l'uno accanto
all'altro, così come si trovarono spente nel criptoportico della vicina "
Villa di Diomede " 18 persone, fra donne, giovanetti ed
adulti, appartenenti a quella ricca dimora. Nessun ornamento e nessun gioiello
si rinvenne accanto alle quattro vittime, ma solo, accanto al muro, erano
depositate poche stoviglie rustiche per vino od acqua, l'ultimo viatico dei
morituri.
Nove vittime
rinvenute in luoghi diversi non rappresentano tutti gli abitanti della Villa.
Gran parte della numerosa "familia" ed il
proprietario stesso avevano cercato scampo, con le altre torme di fuggiaschi,
verso il mare e certamente invano, ché la morte dové sorprenderli nella
disperata fuga.
